A Few of My Favorite Things: On-the-Go-Snacks

By December 17, 2012 No Comments

I never met a mom who wasn’t busy, and this time of year is extremely hectic with all the holiday hustle and bustle. Today I’m sharing a few of my favorite things: on-the-go snacks for moms. While you are working to get everything done, it’s important to keep energy levels up and blood sugar stable to avoid the dreaded crash and impulse to make an unhealthy food choice.

I always have a snack packed: in my bag, in the car, or tucked away in the stroller. My snacks are portable and easy to eat. Here are my favorite tasty and healthy snacks to grab while on the go.

(Please note, I have no affiliation with any of these companies, nor am I being compensated for my endorsements. These recommendations come solely from my experiences as a hungry mom.)

KIND Plus Bar – Dark Chocolate Cherry Cashew. This is a brand new flavor and has less sugar than their other bars. It’s delicious, healthy, all-natural, and gluten and wheat free. At just 180 calories, it offers 4 grams of protein and 9 grams of fat – an ideal combination for balancing energy and providing satiety. Best of all, this specific bar can be purchased at Trader Joe’s for $1.49.  http://www.kindsnacks.com/kind-advantage-starter-kit.html

LARABAR: They make dozens of delicious flavors, and the two that I keep going back to are Cherry Pie and Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip. What I love most about LARABAR is the simplicity of their ingredients. Most, if not all bars are non-GMO, gluten-free, kosher, dairy-free and some are soy free. They are portable, inexpensive and satisfying.

Roasted Almonds: A nut is an easy-squeezy snack to pack or purchase and is very versatile (given you are not allergic). I like ‘clean’ nuts because they provide good fats and protein and can be added to any carbohydrate based snack – like a piece of fruit, or enjoyed on their own. (A clean nut is defined as a nut without oils or flavorings.) Personally, I always have a small container of roasted almonds packed in my gym/diaper bag and grab a few when I’m feeling low energy.

Trader Joe’s Reduced Guilt Woven Wheats Wafer: This is my go-to cracker when I’m looking for a savory snack. Eight crackers are just 120 calories, 2.5 grams of fat, 3 grams of protein and 3 grams of fiber. I love this cracker because you can ‘accessorize’ it any way you like: add a piece of cheese, a slice of avocado, or a smear of peanut butter.
